ODOT's Region 2 Tech Center, located in scenic Salem, is recruiting for a traffic signal operations specialist to conduct Region 2 signal timing investigation studies and activities. This position will conduct traffic signal warrant and capacity analysis and traffic signal timing fieldwork.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and install traffic signal timing for the traffic signals throughout Region 2. 
  • Review and adjust existing signal timing in the field.
  • Maintain a complete file record of each signal on the state highway system within the region.
  • Help develop, install, and monitor interconnected signal system timing plans.
  • Collaborate with ODOT electricians, signal technicians, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) coordinators to implement traffic control technologies and ITS devices at signalized intersections. 
  • Evaluate problems and provide solutions for construction related activities related to signal/device construction or operation.
  • Partner with contractors and project management personnel to ensure traffic problem solutions are appropriate and corrective action is implemented in a timely manner.
  • Conduct signal warrant analysis and engineering investigations of proposed signal locations and prepare reports.
  • Maintain a listing of signals warranted and approved for installation on the state highway system and provide a detailed proposed signal installation report to management.
  • Conduct field studies and traffic investigations and recommend improvements and/or changes.
  • Represent the Region 2 Traffic Unit at public meetings and internal ODOT meetings and conferences.

 

Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of and passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and one year of experience applying professional engineering theory, principles and methods.
 
Special Qualifications:
Driving is an essential function of this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s).

  • Degree in civil, traffic, or transportation related engineering.
  • Knowledge and understanding of signal operation principles.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience working with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Experience using traffic signal analysis software such as Synchro.

 
Working Conditions:

  • This position works in both an office environment with use of a computer workstation and in the field.
  • Regular travel throughout Region 2 is required.
  • Field work involves exposure to extreme traffic and weather conditions.
  • Long periods of standing and walking may be required.
  • This person may be responsible for presenting complicated technical analysis to unreceptive audiences and will be expected to relate information to relevant department policy or decisions.
