Overview / Responsibilities Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is seeking a Transportation Resident Engineer (RE) with a minimum of 8 years of construction management (CM) and/or construction engineering & inspection (CEI) experience on highway and/or bridge projects. This position requires a candidate with effective time-management, written communication, planning, organization and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate has the ability to take initiative, work independently and coordinate efforts with multi-discipline teams. The candidate must possess excellent attention to detail and have the ability to produce high quality work under short time constraints.
As a Resident Engineer, you will play a key role in expanding the capabilities of a successful transportation group in Texas. The ideal candidate has strong technical capabilities, a commitment to delivering a quality product, and an interest in taking on a leadership role.
The successful candidate will be part of the core management team and will have significant opportunity for growth.
Work Location This individual could work in either of our Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston or El Paso, Texas offices depending on candidate preference. Relocation assistance to Texas is available for qualified candidates.
Key Technical Responsibilities Under general supervision and directions, manage contract administration and construction engineering and inspection (CEI) operations of highway and/or bridge construction projects per Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) contract documents, procedures, specifications and manuals Review, and interpret plans, specifications, and other construction documents for constructability, site access, and recommend changes to maximize the ultimate success of the project Meet with project manager, project engineer, and site staff to develop the project safety plan, phasing plan, work restrictions, and construction schedule Provide continuous coordination between all stakeholders Assist the Construction Manager in organizing and conducting the pre-construction meetings Chair weekly construction progress meetings Monitor construction progress and costs; take corrective action as required to manage both schedule and budget Monitor and track construction activities and progresses Track construction and material quantities and daily construction activities and resources Evaluate and process the contractors request for payment Administer the change order and allowance process; review requests for schedule or cost adjustment and negotiate changes to the contract; prepare change order documents for approval Plan, schedule and coordinate construction inspection activities and material testing operations Meet with contractor's supervisors or other project leaders on assigned project sites to discuss and coordinate testing, sampling, or inspection of construction materials or construction procedures to verify compliance with the approved plans, specifications and shop/working drawings Provide guidance and direction as needed to the on-site CM and CEI project staff Oversee project document control operations to ensure the compliance with the contractual document requirements and TxDOT procedures Respond to questions and concerns and ensure that all complaints from site owners and the stakeholders are handled promptly and properly Manage the project close out phase, including certificate of substantial completion, punchlist, and receipt of as-builts, warrantees, and manuals
Key Managerial Responsibilities Implement and oversee compliance with administrative and business operation activities including human resources, training programs, inventory, safety and budget monitoring Maintain effective client relationships and leverages project experience to win work Assist with the coordination, development and production of proposals, SOQs and presentations, ensuring the highest quality of information and documentation output Review implementation of established procedures and implement preventive and corrective actions
Skills / Qualifications Degree in construction management, civil engineering or related field desired but not required. A licensed Professional Engineer having the ability to be licensed in Texas in 6 months from the employment date is required Minimum 8 years of experience in construction and/or engineering, preferably, with major highway and/or bridge construction projects 4+ years of responsible charge experience as a Project Engineer and/or Resident Engineer on roadway and bridge construction projects is preferred Self-starter with strong oral and written communications skills Detail oriented, proactive individual who takes ownership of their work Must be comfortable in both professional office and field work environments Proficient in MS Word / Excel / Outlook and project scheduling tools Candidates must be familiar with state DOT procedures, specifications, test methods and project administration manuals Experience with alternative project delivery and federally funded local government projects a plus Motivated to develop business from new and existing clients Availability to work outside normal business hours as required Possess an extensive understanding of construction standards and practices Skill in construction document handling and administration Skill in organizing and managing cost estimating, bidding, and scheduling procedures Skill in documenting and assessing field conditions, RFI’s and change orders Able to create and aggressively manage construction schedules Able to manage sub-contractors and manpower and delegate tasks to complete goals, objectives and schedules Skilled in client relations and customer service Basic understanding of fundamental cost accounting practices Excellent listening, communication and organizational skills Attention to detail and quality Ability to prioritize multiple tasks Must pass drug test, physical, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving (MVR) policy
Physical Demands Flexibility to travel to construction sites for extended periods and work outside of normal business hours
