The Department of Architectural Engineering (AE) at the Pennsylvania State University is currently accepting applications for a Research Technologist, who will manage and support research activities in the AE Department labs including (but not limited to) Indoor Environment Center Laboratory, Building Environment Simulation and Testing Facility, Building Components and Enclosures Research Laboratory, and Building Enclosure Test Laboratory and provide safety oversight for the department. This position will oversee daily operations, managing/supporting research and teaching activities in these laboratories. Other responsibilities include assisting researchers with proposal development and project execution, helping graduate/undergraduate students conduct research in laboratory and field testing of building systems and components, overseeing safety procedures and processes, supporting faculty in the writing of experimental protocols, research proposals and reports, and related duties as assigned. The successful candidate will possess working knowledge of laboratory safety standards, equipment and facilities maintenance procedures, apply standard scientific practices and techniques, and monitor and maintain accurate records of lab activities. The candidate will possess demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, attention to details, strong organizational skills, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion. Additional responsibilities include development of procedures and the day to day operation for specialized laboratory or research equipment; responsible for training users in equipment operation/laboratory techniques, explaining/demonstrating technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations and outcomes, and consulting with users/manufacturers to refine or adapt methodologies to fit specific experiment requirements. This job will be filled as a level 2, level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A B.S. degree or higher in engineering, data acquisition programming (e.g., LabView) and 2D/3D CAD and solid modeling software proficiency are desired. Familiarity with ASTM, ASHRAE, AAMA, and other testing standards relevant to the AE research programs is desirable. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
