Assistant Engineer: Professional engineering entry-level position. The Assistant will research, analyze and summarize engineering data manually and with computer applications. This requires interpreting maps, plans and specifications, graphs and statistical data. The Assistant Engineer must make complex engineering calculations quickly and accurately, and must prepare clear and concise technical documents, reports and correspondence. Additional duties include record-keeping, and interacting with the public via written correspondence, phone and in-person.
Associate Engineer: Professional engineering position with at least two years of professional engineering experience. Experience in addition to that of the of Assistant Engineer will be: knowledge of road, bridge and facility design and construction; applicable laws, codes and regulations; and basic supervisory principles. The Associate must represent the County effectively in meetings with developers, contractors,professional groups and the public.
Both positions require knowledge of engineering objectives, principles, procedures, standards, practices and information sources. Knowledge of principles and practices of materials testing/analysis and soils analysis is essential. Skills in statistical analysis and mathematical concepts related to the engineering process are also required. Both positions require the equivalent of a four-year college/university degree with major course work in the appropriate engineering discipline.
