Sr Research Engineer

Responsible for experimental design, protocol development, and operation of multiple instruments used to study atomization of agricultural sprays, spray deposition and function on plant surfaces. Use wind tunnel, laboratory, and field study techniques. Also responsible for data reduction, analysis, and interpretation. Support product development of agricultural adjuvants and pesticide formulations, validate concepts in the field, develop marketing materials and presentations on application technology, and contribute to QC and regulatory data streams. Responsible for safe laboratory practices, detailed recordkeeping, report generation, managing outside vendors of equipment or testing services, and participation in tours. Located in Twin Cities metro area. 50% Protocol development and daily operation of: Low speed closed-return wind tunnel for droplet sizing Low-speed drift wind tunnel with downwind collection section oHigh-speed module for aerial spray characterization oLaser diffraction particle size analysis oPhase-doppler particle size analysis oLaser droplet velocimetry oHigh speed imaging of sprays and droplets oDroplet sizing using imaging techniques oRheological study of product solutions oCharacterization of droplet flight and impaction dynamics oMicroscopy oVarious pumps and plumbing systems oValidate with live plants in the field, growth chamber, or greenhouse oPursue additional innovative equipment or techniques for measuring the properties of sprays and droplets and their function in the laboratory and field. 15% oInteract with customers and internal sales and technical staff during tours, trainings, and demonstrations. Travel 5-10%. 15% oStatistical analysis of results. Create reports and presentations of results, i.e. communicate insights to end-users. Produce high quality data and imagery for marketing and training.
15% oCollaborate with outside testing laboratories, researchers, or universities. 5% oParticipate in safety, staff, and strategic meetings. Job Scope: Budget, Revenue, Direct Reports, Sales Volume, etc. Support product development goals, including release of 2-3 new products per year. Generate marketing materials throughout the year based on laboratory and field experiments. Manage relationships and testing with outside researchers. Participate in 12+ tours and trainings annually.

Required Qualifications: Experience and Education oBachelor’s degree in engineering, chemical engineering, fluid mechanics, agricultural engineering or related field(s). o6 years relevant work experience oExperience interacting with customers, i.e. sales, education, or extension.Competencies & Other Skills Competencies and other Skills oFluency with software related to instrumentation, MS Office, analytical and data analysis software (Matlab), Data acquisition systems (Texas Instruments or Labview), and statistical software (SAS or R). oAbility to rapidly learn new techniques and apply them to solving real-world problems. oStrong communication skills. Preferred Qualifications: Experience and Education oM.S. or Ph.D. degree in engineering, chemical engineering, fluid mechanics, agricultural engineering or related field(s). oExperience with laser droplet velocimetry oExperience within agriculture, horticulture, crop and/or soil science, plant physiology, ecology, or other biological sciences. oExperience with the instruments listed above. oProduct development or R&D experience. oChemical and/or food and agriculture industry experience. Competencies & Other Skills oInterest in hands-on research in field or greenhouse. oAdvanced software skills. oCompetencies in fluid mechanics, sprays, and atomization oCompetency in public speaking and creating visual presentations. |
