What the job is: The Civil Engineer is a highly engaged, community-focused position. As the sole staff member in the Village’s engineering function within the Public Works Department, the Civil Engineer is involved in all aspects of municipal engineering. From streets, to water and sewer, to residential construction and site plan review, the Civil Engineer has meaningful opportunities to engage with staff in all departments, residents and contractors.
Job responsibilities include:
Engineering support for streets, sewer and water
Inspecting residential construction projects
Verifying projects comply with Village code and engineering standards
Managing public construction projects
Working directly with contractors
Talking and meeting with residents to answer questions
Reviewing residential and commercial grading and site plans
Developing project budgets
Helping create infrastructure improvement plan budget
Required qualifications include:
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field
4-6 years of experience, preferably municipal projects
State of Illinois Engineer-in-Training (Fundamentals of Engineering) required; Professional Engineer preferred
Valid driver’s license
Strong knowledge of civil engineering principles
Strong computer skills (intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic GIS proficiency)
Familiarity with common land surveying equipment
Familiarity with smart phones and/or tablets
Interpersonal and Communication
Outstanding customer service skills
Great communication skills and ability to explain technical issues in easy-to-understand manner
Good team member also capable of working independently
Self-starter able to manage multiple projects and deadlines
Emphasis on continuous improvement
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Occasional lifting/carrying up to 20-25 pounds (with or without reasonable accommodation)
Frequent walking and standing (sometimes on uneven surfaces), talking, listening, and operating computer (with or without reasonable accommodation)
Work time is split approximately half working indoors (office) and half outdoors (job sites)
Strong emphasis on workplace safety

The Village of Glencoe is a beautiful, historic community with a population of approximately 8,800. It is located in the North Shore region of northern Cook County along Lake Michigan, approximately 20 miles north of downtown Chicago. Glencoe has a vibrant downtown, historic neighborhoods with a variety of architectural styles and has the third-largest concentration of homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
