The Bioinformatics research group in North Bethesda, Maryland is seeking a highly motivated bioinformatics analyst interested in transforming healthcare. You will play a key role in translating population genomic data into clinical care by leveraging the DiscovEHR dataset of 145,000 exome sequences and accompanying clinical data. You will apply state-of-the-art computational methods, programming abilities, and critical thinking skills to translational research projects in collaboration with internal and external clinicians and biomedical scientists, statisticians, and the clinical phenomics team. The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to work independently as part of a multidisciplinary team, communicate clearly, and deliver timely results.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Analyze exome sequences and related data
Collaborate with bioinformatics engineers to develop automated analysis pipelines for standardized workflows and end-user tools
Use bioinformatics expertise and knowledge of genomics to champion best practices and explore new methodologies
Share data analysis knowledge with colleagues
Stay current with relevant literature and bioinformatics tools
Work closely with Geisinger research staff to evaluate Phenomic Initiatives projects
Ensure completeness, correctness and integrity of analyses and data sets
Communicate results clearly to collaborators
Participate in national conferences and co-author scientific publications
Perform other duties as assigned
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
Experience analyzing next-generation sequencing data
Demonstrated expertise with bioinformatics tools and databases
Experience with variant analysis, GWAS, and/or PheWAS preferred
Demonstrates scripting skills in Perl, Python, and/or R. Demonstrates understanding of relational database concepts and query tools
Experience working in a UNIX/Linux environment
Demonstrates understanding of clinical genomics
Demonstrates knowledge of research methodology
Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills, flexibility, organization, resourcefulness, and attention to detail
Demonstrates the ability to work independently as part of a multidisciplinary team
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Master's degree in bioinformatics, genomics, clinical genomics, statistics, computational biology or closely related field required
Minimum three years of experience with health care or genomic data required
