The College of Engineering invites applications for Department Head of Biomedical Engineering (BME). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the vision and operations of this newly created department established in 2017. BME has a strong growth trajectory and is aligned and supported by the strategic plan of the College and University. The department represents the core of biomedical engineering research and teaching at UMass, Amherst and leverages synergies with other departments in the College as well as with the new Institute of Applied Life Sciences (IALS: https://www.umass.edu/ials/). IALS was established by a joint investment of more than $150 million from the Massachusetts Life Science Center and the University and manages more than 30 core equipment facilities that enable its translational mission (https://www.umass.edu/ials/core-facilities). The BME Department also collaborates with the UMass Medical School located in Worcester, MA and with Baystate Health located in Springfield, MA.

The College of Engineering at UMass Amherst offers B.S. degrees, M.S. degrees, and Ph.D. degrees in the Departments of Biomedical, Chemical, Civil and Environmental, Electrical and Computer, and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. The College is ranked as the best public engineering college in New England and the #31 public engineering graduate program by U.S. News and World Report. The Fall 2018 enrollment included 2,250 undergraduate and 610 graduate students. Research expenditures exceeded $31.5M in the past year. Candidates should be able to hold an appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure in BME. Exceptionally qualified candidates who hold the rank of Associate Professor (or equivalent) will be considered. Applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent) degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field. The anticipated start date for this position is September 1, 2020.

A shortlist will be developed and invited to interview on campus. Shortlist candidates will be asked for letters of recommendation from up to 5 references. These letters should address among other things the candidate’s track record of leadership and/or potential for excellence in leadership. The committee will request brief abstracts for a research seminar and a seminar discussing future research, teaching, and diversity plans for the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
