UTSA specializes in health, cybersecurity, fundamental futures, and human-social development, reflected in its urban-serving mission. UTSA fosters an innovation ecosystem that is accelerating transdisciplinary research through public and private strategic partnerships, home to a myriad of cross-disciplinary research centers and institutes along with research core facilities, and a robust system of research development to create discovery that enables innovative and cutting-edge work. With over 34,000 students supported by more than 1,400 faculty and 5,600 staff and student employees, it is the largest university in the San Antonio metropolitan and South Texas region. UTSA is focused on promoting social and economic prosperity for our region, where 63% of its students come from San Antonio and South Texas. More than two thirds of UTSA students come from groups traditionally underserved by higher education (with more than half of the student body identifying as Hispanic) and about half of UTSA students are the first in their families to attend a college or university. Additionally, transfer students comprise about 40% of UTSA's total undergraduate population. Further enhancing the already rich mosaic of our student population is UTSA's military community, which makes up approximately 15% of total students and includes active-duty military members, veterans, reserves/guard, and their spouses and dependents.
